General Series Band Journal August 2012 Numbers 2112 - 2114

Product Code: 34008
No. 2112 Lift up your voice (Stephen Bulla)
This up-tempo setting, made for Melbourne Staff Band, is a re-imaging of the familiar hymn tune, 'St Francis'. The music takes on a new excitement with modern rhythms that again reveal ageless quality of the melody and text.

No. 2113 The Lion of Judah (Kenneth Downie)
This is a set of four variations based on the hymn tune of the same name attributed to Henry Tucker. The term 'Lion of Judah', originating in the Old Testament, has come to be another name for Jesus.

No. 2114 Flow gently, sweet Afton (Paul Sharman)
Although strongly linked with William Featherstone's hymn,'My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine', Jonathan Spilman's melody, 'Flow gently, sweet Afton' was originally written to accompany a poem written by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns called 'Afton water'. The imagery of the gentle flowing water of this small Scottish river was uppermost in the arrnger's mind when writing but the music also creates a reflective atmosphere in which to contemplate Featherstone's hymn.
