The official history of The Salvation Army records that the first report of the ‘Cellar, Gutter and Garret Brigade‘ appeared in 1884. The ‘lasses‘, it was stated, spent the whole day visiting from house to house, storey to storey and room to room, washing the little ones, scrubbing floors, nursing the sick and listening to heart-rending tales of woe. A century later, such work continued in what had by then become known as the Goodwill Department, whose officers worked amongst people who for a whole host of circumstances found themselves disadvantaged. This audiobook, based on the book of the same name by Major Pat Charlesworth, tells the life story of one of those modern-day ‘lasses‘ - the author herself. It takes the reader from Belfast to Bristol, Leeds to London, and other locations, and provides a sensitive insight into one of the most important, but little known, services provided by The Salvation Army.
