The official history of The Salvation Army records that the first report of the ‘Cellar, Gutter and Garret Brigade‘ appeared in 1884. The ‘lasses‘, it was stated, spent the whole day visiting from house to house, storey to storey and room to room, washing the little ones, scrubbing floors, nursing the sick and listening to heart-rending tales of woe. A century later, such work continued in what had by then become known as the Goodwill Department, whose officers worked amongst people who for a whole host of circumstances found themselves disadvantaged. This audiobook, based on the book of the same name by Major Pat Charlesworth, tells the life story of one of those modern-day ‘lasses‘ - the author herself. It takes the reader from Belfast to Bristol, Leeds to London, and other locations, and provides a sensitive insight into one of the most important, but little known, services provided by The Salvation Army.
How often do you quote the Bible in everyday conversation? Probably a lot more than you realise. Expressions such as ‘A Little Birdie Told Me‘, ‘The Apple of Your Eye‘ and ‘The Handwriting on the Wall‘ are all scriptural and yet many of us use them nearly every day. Major Ed Forster has gathered together a sampling of these popular expressions in this book. Here he offers a sprinkling of humour, a host of Biblical applications, striking colour photos and brief summaries of how these expressions are used today.
‘In 1929‘, begins the author, ‘a constitutional storm that had long been gathering suddenly burst, sweeping from office General Bramwell Booth. So traumatic was this event that for many years ‘1929‘ - for that is how it was known - was only talked of in hushed tones in Army circles. The telling of what happened was left to those from outside the Army family‘. Now after 80 years the full story of the crisis, with all its astonishing twists and turns, is set out by a Salvationist writer. In the drafting of this account, General John Larsson (Retired) has had access to hitherto unpublished material, much of it in the Army‘s heritage centres around the world.
